Question:

Is this a german family name?

my husband's last name is spieles, i know that spiel is a german word that can be translated as 'game' or 'play' or something like that, but i can't find any info on a family name. i know it's spelling may have been changed, but i don't know how to go about finding out what it was changed from. only his mother is living, and she has no idea.

Anyone have any ideas?

I believe that Spieles is in fact German. I took a look on Ancestry.com and it appears that all of the immigrating Spieles in the 1900 census listed Germany as their birthplace. I also checked the immigration records on Ancestry and most of them there were from Germany/Prussia too. There are 213 Spieles listed on Ancestry in various family trees. If there is a certain family you would like for me to try to locate, let me know and I will do what I can. Take care
