Origin: English

Spelling variations of this family name include: Hanson, Hansom and others.

First found in Yorkshire where they were seated from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D.

Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: John Hanson, who settled in Maryland in 1691; Samuel Hanson settled in the Barbados in 1679; Simon Hanson arrived in New York in 1687; Charles, Frederick, James, John, Joseph, Peter, Robert, Samuel, Thomas and William Hanson all arrived in Philadelphia between 1770 and 1860.
