I want to find out about my ancestry from here and now to ancesters in europe. Can someone help me?

I have been told that on my paternal side, my grandparents came from a town or city in what was the White Ukraine, but we are German. I have little knowledge from my maternal side, but apparently go back to somewhere in the same area. I know that my maternal side changed the spelling of thier last name when they immigrated to the USA, but it`s quite close to the same sound. I am not sure if my paternal side changed the spelling of thier last name or not when they came to Canada. Rumour has it from my deceased father that my Great Uncle from my grandfather`s side was a body guard to the Czar`s wife, but was never heard from again after the Bolshevic revelution. I do not know what is truth or fiction but I do want to know about my ancestry. My wife has documentation of her ancestry in Canada dating back to 1600. It makes me envious. Is there anyone out there who does this kind of thing and will help me? You never know, we might be related. Help please.
