German genealogy?

Question:

German genealogy?

Is there a reason besides the thirty years war why I can't find any family history before 1640 to 1680. If they didn't keep accurate or comprehensive baptismal or wedding information before this time I'd really like to know. Later than that is preatty well fleshed out, but I can't find anything from before then.
