Position:Home>Genealogy> Last name origin?Question: Last name origin?Anyone have a clue what the origin of "Rohme" is? It sounds like Rome, Italy. The H is silent. Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: It's very German. You'll find it probably came out of the central regions. It's found in many Lutheran records, so there was clearly a population of it in the south near the Palatinate and Switzerland. I've also come across it in the northern Swiss provinces. The most famous German I remember with the name was Ernst Rohme, who was a pain in the neck to Hitler. On the Night of the Long Knives, Hitler had Rohme assasinated. BTW, where pronunciation is concerned, it's pronounced Rome in Germany, too. |
