Question:

Search geneology for free?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Find yourself a large library in your area with a decent genealogy room. They will invariably have a public-access subscription to either Ancestry.com or Heritage Quest. Both will allow you to research your tree in great depth. In addition, the library will have access to valuable reference books like Germans to America, Dutch to America and the PRDH (for French-Canadian research).

Libraries can order reference books that you need through Interlibrary loan. They have published biographies and historical references of the region. They have old phone books and city directories going back to the mid-1800s or earlier. The librarians are well-versed on what's in their clipping files, which local newspapers are filmed (and almost always free for use at the library).

Each state has an official state library and archives where all records are housed, regardless of county, as they are the second-tier repository for all official records throughout their states. You only pay for copying costs.

In addition, many library systems allow patrons to sign in from home for free once you get your library card and access their databases and resources for free. No one else comes close to beating that deal.
