Question:

Foreign surnames... any clue what they mean? Greek, Italian, Indian....?

Can anyone name what any of these mean,

Fabiancich

Stambouli (stambolis)

Mistri- I think this means "skilled labourer" e.g- carpenter?

Fatrenta

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Fabiancich would be "Fabian's son" and would be most likely come from one of the Eastern European countries between Albania / the Balkans and the Russian satellite states.

Stamboli could be Austrian, Greece, Turkish or Albanian.

Mistri can be German, Italian or French. The only one for whom I can find immigration records to the US came from Germany in 1869.

I can't find anything on Fatrenta. My guess is somewhere from Northern Italy to the Balkans, but it's only an educated guess.

Your best bet for connecting with people who have done a great deal of research on these names would be the state/county and surname boards on Genealogy.com
