Family tree, I need some help as it is very confusing, I have been searching for months so help would be great

O.K, where to start. On my father's side (the one I am trying to research) his mother came from the Greek Island of Heos, I do not care too much on that, it's when you get to my Grandfather that it becomes particulary difficult. His family come (recently) from Alexandria, Egypt, but I know that originally he came from Northern Italy. His father (great-granddad) fought and died in World War One. His mother was apparently...loose... and by the end of the war she was married to a different man called Showak Mistri (Italian name, not Indian Mistry) but, because of fear of having a bastard child she put the fathers name as Showak. Now, although I am not 100% sure, Showak was not his real father (close family friends say that he was not) but in all the records they say he is. I cannot ask him myself as he is very ill in France/Switzerland, all the main records are in Alexandria, Egypt and Addis Abbaba, Ethiopia (where he lived most of his life due to job commitments) and Athens, Greece.

I now live in London, England and my Dad has told me all that he knows, which is what I have told you. My Uncle lives in France, my Grandmother lives in Athens, My Auntie is somewhere in England, and the rest of my relatives are scattered around Italy and Greece. Just some names... Mario is my Grandfathers brother (Mediterranean name?), Joseph is my Grandad's name, and I think, I stress the think, my great-grandmothers surname was Vingeski, not sure on that though.

Any help, hints, tips on where to look, or how to look up my family history would be deeply appreciated.

I have found other people from Northern Italy, Lombardia with the same surname as me, Mistri. Would certain regions have certain surnames?
