Question:

Surname origins?

Does anyone know the origin of the surname Shempert?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Hi there!

I went onto Ancestry.com and looked at a database called New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957. There are records of 13 Shemperts with that spelling coming to America. All of them that listed an Ethnicity/Nationality listed German as their ethnicity.

The interesting thing is that the highest concentration of Shempert in the United states was in the state of Mississippi and there are white ones and there are black ones. It is very unlikely that their ancestors were from the same place. So, with that being said, the 'origin' of the name is German but the origin of your individual family may be different. The only way you are going to know for sure would be to start with yourself and work your way back, person by person and generation by generation. If you trace your lineage in this manner, your origins will reveal themselves to you.

Some free sites with Shempert information are as follows:

There are also 53 hits on WorldConnect at Rootsweb which are user contributed family trees. You may find some useful information there, but I would encourage you to confirm any information you find by conducting your own research.

These sights may or may not contain your relatives, but I thought that you would find them interesting nonetheless. Blessings to you in your search.
