Question:

Why is it that I look Native American and no one else in my family does?

Everyone in my family just plainly looks Black. But I look Native American apparently... or Hawaiian. My great grandmother on my mother's side is Blackfeet Indian, and my grandmother on my father's side is Arawak. No one in my family looks like me... but apparently, I look like my grandmother. Isn't that weird? And will my children look Native American as well?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: This isn't that surprising. If you are what would be called "African-American" then you are likely a mix of African, Native American, and European ancestry, to varying degrees - if it's in the genetic mix, it can appear in any one individual. The same thing is fairly common in Hispanic families (which I suppose you would also be if your grandmother is Arawak) where you have the same mixes - tri-racial, to be accurate.

Obviously, the appearance of your children would depend also on their father's background, but it would be expected that they might share some of your physical characteristics.
