The advice to go to the local records is good, they are usually online - Search YAHOO for "Vital Record <location>" where location is your county, city, etc municipal record keeping level. That will give you a site to go to, follow their directions. Cemeteries and Obituaries can also help. Below are some generic sites, Do the Search I recommended - or go to your town hall.
