Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I can make it easy for you. Contact the funeral home that buried him. They will have run a report on him (or can run it now for you) with the Pentagon that would confirm his enlistment date, branch of service, dates of service, where he served, etc. This is how they arrange those nice honor guards at the funerals from the local American Legion branch.

You can also visit his gravesite because the military provides a free gravemarker with the information you want on it. It's a small bronze plate that is laid on the foot of the grave.

If you don't know which funeral home handled his final arrangements, you can call any local funeral home and ask for help. I have several who help me routinely to pull records and they don't charge me for it.

Once you have the record you can also write to the National Archives Military Service Center in St Louis MO for additional information. But this way you'll have the majority of the details ahead of time and can decide how far you'd like to pursue it.
