Question:

What is the origin of the last name "Hersom"?

Eh? Anybody? I'm trying to figure out what I am. From my mom's side I'm Engish and Irish but I don't know what I am from my dad's side. His last name is Hersom.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The name hersom has been recorded in British history since the time when the Anglo-Saxons ruled over the region. Such a name was given to someone who was a guardian of cattle or sheep. The surname hersom is derived from the Old English word hierde, which means herd, and the patronymic suffix -son. Thus, the name hersom literally means "son of the herd."

Spelling variations of this family name include: Herdson, Hirdson, Heardson, Hurdson, Herson and others.

First found in Lancashire, on the west coast near Lythom-St. Annes, where they were associated with Furness Abbey.

Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: Sarah Herson, who sailed to New York in 1820.
