Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: the 2 best ones I have found are rootsweb.com and familysearch.org.
Ancestory.com charges you for 99% of their services.
family search.org gives you 1880 census reports and ancestor files. It will show you if anyone is researching the same family. Then you can contact that researcher.
Rootsweb.com will give you may areas to search.
Just remember the research these people put on the site is only as good as the research. Make sure you verify everything you find. Don't ever thake someone else's word. You could end up chasing the wrong family.
