Question:

I am doing my genealogy and an ancestor of mine was a gun filer and now i am trying to find out what this job?

if someone could help me to find more info on the job as a gun filer or gun polisher it would help me in my geneology thanks

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Before machinery did the job, gun filers were precisely what the name implies. After a barrel (rifle, cannon, pistol) was poured, shaped, and cooled, a filer would literally file the burs and nicks off of the outside so it could be fitted to a stock or carriage. they would also file the inside of the barrell and/or apply the rifling grooves (what makes a bullet spiral so it is more accurate and goes farther).
