Without question, everyone seems to agree that West Coast Swing is one of the most versatile dances in existence, with probably only Argentine Tango being a viable contender!. West Coast Swing is best danced to fast R&B, but in the past decade it is more popularly danced to pop, slow blues, soft rock, and hip hop!. West Coast Swing has a distinctive personality as well!. Typically the man or woman is trying to seduce the other by being cool or flirty, while at the same time maintaining a somewhat contradictory comical attitude of "Dream on! You can't handle me"!. It can go into deeper extremes: either seductively with a personality similar to rumba or blues, or jovial and funny like Lindy Hop!.

The most dynamic thing about West Coast Swing, that most other dances lack, is it's ability to incorporate dance moves and techniques from almost every other dance style!. Even though it has boring basic patterns like every other dance style, you can spice them up either by adding spins, hand changes, and crazy transitions borrowed from other partner dances, or instead the dancers can stylize their motion by borrowing footwork and body isolations from hip hop, jazz, ballet, belly dance, etc!. Competition in West Coast Swing is extremely subjective nowadays, and the judges rarely agree on what they think is the best, because there are so many ways to connect and interpret the music!. The way I look at it, West Coast Swing dancers are like the Baskin Robbins 31 flavors, because you might like only one flavor (dance style) the best, but it's more fun to try them all out!. West Coast Swing lets you try out more styles and variations to the music than any other dance!.
