Question: Which type of dance should i take!?
I take dance at my school, we just finished musical theater and soon will be starting hip-hop!. Its kinda fun, but I still want to take other classes at my local dance studio!. I don't want something too time-consuming, for I have other activities as well!. They offer:
*ballet (preferably not though)
*acrobatics
* hip-hop
*jazz
*tap
*lyrical ( !? what is this!? is it similar to modern!?)

Keep in mind i dont have much experience, so ballet and tap probably wouldn't be the best idea!.
So what is ya'lls opinions!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

i will give you a list of pros and cons and some basic info for each type of dance and hopefully it will help you decide what classes to take!.

ballet: it requires a lot of discipline, and you have to put a lot into it to ever get really good!. at first strength, flexibility, and technique will be really hard becasue those who would be in your class have proably already had several years of training!. you cannot expect to become good at ballet overnight!. its a LONG process!. usually, by age 12, most girls who do ballet take 4+ hours of class a week!. on the plus side, if the studio you are looking at is good for beginners, then it is a good option because it helps with balance, poise, and is the basis for all other types of dance, so you could easily jump into other types of classes later on if you wanted to do so!.

acro: if you have never done this, it will also be pretty hard to start!. acro also takes incredible strength and flexibility, and once again, most who are successful at this have been training since age 3 or 4!. the good news is that acro/ being able to tumble is not necessary if you want to be a sucessful dancer!. the good thing about acro is that it will make you really strong on your whole body, while dance is mostly leg strength!. also, its pretty cool to be able to whip out a standing back tuck!. if you are interested in competitive cheerleading this is your best bet!

jazz: this is really fun and fast-paced and easier to jump into than ballet or acro, though it still requires flexibility!. there is usually a mix of technique and current moves and there is a lot of room for creativity as far as choreo!. this is my personal favorite type of dance because it is a really wide genre!. if you do musical theatre this is helpful because a lot of the moves in dance numbers come from jazz!. also, jazz is very expressive, and big!. its often often over the top, which can be fun!

hip-hop: this would be pretty easy to start of you have never danced before!. it requires little technique and is mostly about feeling the music!. its upbeat and fun, but if you are looking for something that is more challenging long term, i would go with something else!. hip-hop is cool though, becasue you can really impress people at clubs and school dances with stuff you learn in class

tap: this is really easy to do if you have no dance experience!. tap uses very little technique!. as long as you can feel the beat you should be ok!. if you are rythmically challenged, tap is not for you!. there is a ton of changing of wieght distribution!. at first it may seem confusing, but really after a couple of weeks youll catch on!. it doesnt require flexibilty or very much strength and is really fun!. some people claim that tap ruins your joints, but as long as you danc eon proper floors youll be fine!

lyrical: yes this is sort of like modern, its also like a mix of jazz and ballet!. ir shows off technique, control, and extension, something you will find very difficult without previous dance experiance!. it is very emotional and expressive!. you really connect with the song lyrics 9hence the name lyrical)!. it is beautiful when done well!. i would not advise taking lyrical without having a year or two of ballet 1st because extension and control is non-existent if you dont know the basics!.

good luck with watever you chose, and remember that no matter what class you decide to take, determination is key!. nothing is easy at first, but the harder you work, the more sucessful you will be! :)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Okay so if you don't want to put a lot of time into this, my advice would be is don't do it!. If your not committing your time to this, than it's a waste of your and everyone in your classes time!. And also, if you don't have a lot of experience, then that would mean you would have to practice even more than everyone else!Www@QuestionHome@Com

I would say try taking both Ballet and Lyrical: ballet is the bases of all dance, and lyrical will helpyou use all you have learnt in ballet but without so much pressure on techinique
Btw lyrical is a combination of modern and ballet, you dance to the music and the dance represents the lyricsWww@QuestionHome@Com

i would say go with jazz!.!.!.!.jazz can be really fun because it tends to have a quicker beat than lyrical and ballet but slower than hip hop!.!.!.!.also by taking this class it can help improve your flexibility and strength of your core muscles!.!.!.i thouroughly enjoy jazz as a fun class although my main study is in lyrical!.!.!.!.hope this answer helped!!!!Www@QuestionHome@Com

lyrical is really flowy and slow moving like loose ballet in a way
and hip-hop sounds like a ton of fun
but jazz might improve your dancing
its really up to what you want to do they are all different types of dance so you really can't go wrongWww@QuestionHome@Com

you should take ballet in addition to another dance form
i suggest jazz and ballet or just hip hopWww@QuestionHome@Com

TAP!!!!!!Www@QuestionHome@Com

If I were you, I'd take hip-hop!. Hope this helped!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The type of dance you take depends on your personality!.
Don't do ballet if your not into it and its a lot of work!. Since your going to start hip-hop at your school see how much you like i!. If you find it to be to "gangsta" then go with jazz!. Jazz is more girly!. I find Jazz to the most fun of all these!. I take ballet, lyrical, jazz and hip-hop!. I used to take tap but it wasn't my thing!. Lyrical is kind of like modern!. Lyrical is a combo of jazz and ballet it was created to rebel against the structure and neatness of ballet!. In lyrical you dance to songs with lyrics and the moves never end!. they go into each other unlike other styles!. I would suggest for you do hip-hop but like I said if you think the style is to rough in school do Jazz!. Hope I helped =)

also Another thing if you want to good your going to have to practice!. I know you said you have other activities but your going to have to practice outside of dance class!. so set aside a half-hour a day at he least to practice!. good luck =)

Even if you don't have much experience, a ballet or tap class could be beneficial to the hip-hop class you will be taking!. If you are thinking about this class as merely a supplement to the hip-hop, I would probably recommend jazz or the other hip-hop class!. Here's a breakdown of each style:
---
Ballet: This will be good if you are going to do many "tricks" or traditional-infused moves in your class, as an older-beginner ballet class will help you with core and muscle control!. Try observing the class you would take in ballet beforehand and seeing if the teacher infuses typical workout exercises into her class(push-ups, sit-ups, crunches, etc!.) Bonus points if they do!.
---
Acrobatics: I wouldn't recommend this if you are seriously studying hip-hop, as the risk for injury is higher than other forms of dance!. Once agian good for learning "tricks", but I wouldn't recommend this unless you need to learn more than the basic cartwheel, somersault, etc!. Bonus points if the teacher adds injury prevention lessons in class!.
---
Hip-hop: Obviously a good supplement, but it might be hard to switch back-and-forth between the classes if they are teaching completely different styles!. Observe a class to see if you like the teacher's style or not!.
---
Jazz: Similar benefits as ballet, but in a more upbeat and active way!. More likely to add workout exercises to the routine, which makes it better accompanied with hip-hop!. I recommend this class, as some jazz techniques are infused into hip-hop occasionaly!.
---
Tap: A good class if you need to hone your rhythm and beat-counting skills, but too drastically different from hip-hop for it to be a clear choice!. I would observe a class and give the class more consideration the more music is used!. A technique-only class with no rhythm lessons involved will be a polar opposite to hip-hop, making it not of much help!.
---
Lyrical: Lyrical does indeed seem like modern, but in lyrical more emphasis is based on classic positions and music!. Has benefits similar to tap, but does definitely require quite a bit of ballet and jazz experience!. Most studios REQUIRE proof of several years of both jazz and ballet, whether through classes at their studio or through a trial period of the class, so I can't recommend this seeing as you don't have much experience!.
---
The best idea in my opinion is JAZZ, because it meshes with hip-hop best to provide a rounded-out dance experience!. Jazz does not involve too much commitment, you can even take just an hour or two a week and recieve quite a bit of knowledge!.
Good luck, and have fun dancing!Www@QuestionHome@Com
