Question: Dance college with little ballet experience!?
I've been dancing for 10 years (i'm 13) I love it! I do jazz and tap ( those are my best types by far) i have a little hip hop and modern experience (not much at all) , and I used to do ballet, but that was just when I was little (3-7 or 8)!. I'm not too good, but I pick up on thing easily!. Do you think I could make it into a good college with dance as my major without much ballet experience!?

I'm asking because I want to know if I will have to learn it before it's to late!.

I'm also thinking I would want to go to Smith College in Mass!. but is that a good college if you've been there!? if not, any other suggestions!? Please ONLY in the northeast, I would rather not leave my family in maine completely!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It just so happens that Smith's dance program - actually offered through the Five College Dance Department (including Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and UMass-Amherst) - is one of the non-audition programs!. So as long as you can get accepted into one of the five colleges, you can definitely declare yourself a dance major!. So you can certainly "make it into a good college," since Smith is quite prestigious for it's academics, but as for it having a good dance program, that's another matter!. It will let you keep dancing in college, but it's not about to prepare you for becoming a professional dancer!.

Many of the other liberal arts colleges have non-audition programs!. You can search for them using Dance Magazine's online search tool
http://www!.dancemagazine!.com/thecollegeg!.!.!.
and leaving the "Required for Admission" box unchecked!.

The bigger question is why you'd want to major in dance when those programs won't have much jazz or tap!. Perhaps you'd like majoring in musical theatre more!. You don't aim for a major where you "have to" learn anything that isn't your passion!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

most colleges have either ballet majors or modern majors!. few have jazz majors and I haven't heard of any with hip hop dance majors!. seriously though, even if you would want to be a jazz or modern major, you need to take ballet at least once a week (since your only 13) to help your technique!. You will never have enough ballet so I would suggest signing up for ballet if you would like to major in dance in collegeWww@QuestionHome@Com

There are a lot of colleges that offer dance programs in the northeast!. You should contact the admissions office to find out the requirements for the dance major programs!. You have a few years to worry about it!. IN the meantime why not take a ballet class just in case!?

Good luck!Www@QuestionHome@Com

hey omg im like in the same position as you!! i ask !?s like that all the time! haha ive looked at smith college i liked the dance program but its girls only and i wanna meet my hubbie in college so i didnt like it!. But its up to you about that!. I know that juliard doesnt let you audition unless youve had at least 3 years in ballet or modern!. But ballet and modern are the two most important types of dance for the auditions, then probably jazz!. I have looked into this alot!. Im 13 too and just starting ballet!. I started modern last year!. good luckWww@QuestionHome@Com
