Question: Dance choreography!? I'm thinking of doing some of my own!?
I'm 14 years old and have been dancing since I was 10!. I take Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop, and Lyrical!. I'm also on the competitive team!. We do lots of dances in a group (the whole team, we only have 5 members!.) But the thing is, if we get a trophy, it stays at the studio!. I'd like to have my own trophies!.
I don't want to sound selfish about wanting my own trophies!. I want to also do some solo's so I can learn to go out on the stage and be comfortable with being there by myself, not with some friends by my side!.
I'm thinking about doing some of my own choregrophy, and video taping myself and possibly putting it on YouTube, and emailing it to my dance teacher, and if she likes it I might be able to do it for competition!.
Any tips for me!? How should I start!? Longest, most detailed answer will get 5 points!Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think u should definatly try it!!!!! I dance also and I love making up choreography, so I think u should just start with ur favorite kind of dance, or what ur best at!. Practice alot then tape it and if ur satisfied then put it on you tube and send it to your teacher, that way she will like it and u and do solo's!

play a song that you would like to do a solo to
listen to it until you have it memorized basically
then play it where you have enough room to dance
feel the music and the way that you want to move with it
listen to the voice, beats, different instruments
and just improvise while recording it!.

This is a touchy issue!. You ARE old enough to begin choreographing your own routine, BUT many schools require you to take a private lesson a week in order to do a solo!. If you make it up yourself, it will have to be at home!. You won't have the correct flooring or space!. And you wont be able to correct your own mistakes!. This is why pupils do private lessons in the first place!.
I wouldn't mention to your teacher anything about trophies!. This should not be the reason why you want to dance!.
The first thing to do is talk to your teacher about opportunities to do a solo!. Please note that these come with a fee!. If there are opportunities for a solo, you will be set up with private lessons!. As you ARE older, you can tell your private lesson teacher you want to choreograph some of it yourself, but you would also like some help from her/him!.
If private lessons are NOT available, then you may ask your teacher if there is a chance to perform a solo without having a teacher teach it to you!. She may say yes or no!. If she says yes, ask her if you can borrow the spare studio sometimes!. Or just make it up at home!.
If she says no, accept it!. It is HER studio!.
