High school kids almost universally get it wrong when it comes to social dancing!. You and your date should pay attention to each other, or it's not a date, but as a rough guide, dancing maybe one in five dances with your date is about right, and you should make some attempt to dance with as many other people as you can!. It is a social activity, after all (this also means you don't get to dance as much with an alternate hottie as you do with your date!)!.
How close to get is up to the girl, within reason!. If your date is an especially strong dancer, he may bring you into an especially close hold for some specialized figures!. That at a high school dance would be so rare that the possibility can, for practical purposes, be ignored!.
Slow dancing, more properly called slow rhythm dancing, uses a modification of the ballroom hold!. In ballroom, there's a small point of contact on the right side of the body, somewhere between the pelvic bone and the ribcage, that generally stays in contact!. The exact spot depends on the "fit" of the partners, so if you're the same height it'll obviously be different than if he's a foot taller than you!. In social dancing you normally need to modify this somewhat, and that usually means a closer hold and more contact, because the dance floor is more crowded; but if you're uncomfortable with the idea, it's perfectly acceptable to dance with no body contact at all!. The one thing you definitely want to do is avoid forcing yourself so close that you're off balance or in an uncomfortalbe position!. Many girls think they have to reach up and put a hand on a guy's neck, even if it means standing tip-toed!. That's just wrong on so many levels! Standard hold is for the guy's left and girl's right hands to be held together, the girl's left hand resting gently on the guy's upper right arm!. Closer is OK, but not if it interferes with the rest of your body as you dance!. It's supposed to be comfortable and fun, after all!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
