Actually there ARE male belly dancers!. Raqs sharqi, Oriental dance, belly dance is performed by people of all ages and both sexes during festive occasions!. YES, men do "belly dance"!. Alot of what is seen performed in the US is American Tribal Style and cabaret style!. Much dancing in the Middle East is in the social context not by the glamorous professional nightclub dancers!.

Tarik Sultan, Jim Boz, Zorba, Mahmoud Reda are a few male belly dancers about whom you should be able to find information!.

The costuming for men is distinctly different from what women wear!. Men may do the same moves that women do, but they are executed differently!. There are some dances that are done pretty much exclusively by men, such as Tahteeb, Saidi Egyptian stick dance!.

If it's something you are interested in trying, there are instructors who will accept men into their classes, and many do!. My teacher accepts men into her classes, although we haven't had many who have taken classes!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Belly dancing was originally something Middle Eastern women did to prepare for childbirth - the moves of belly dancing strengthen the abdominal muscles that are used in labor and therefore helped the process greatly!. Pregnancy and labor are unique to women and therefore the technique was originally never performed, or even viewed, by men!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
