Question: What do you think about strict instrustors!?
I'm starting dance this summer and have bee thinking about going to a certain studio, but everyone says the instructors there are really mean!. I'm pretty sure its just dance studio rivalry, but, do you think its best to have a strict teacher, or a laid back one!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well, you learn more from the stricter ones!. I had a ballet teacher over the summer that was known for being the strictest but i improved more than I had all year!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

First of all, there's definitely a difference between "strict" and "mean!." The girls who claim that the teachers at this particular studio are mean are probably used to a laid-back style and interpret stricter teaching as being unfriendly!.

Personally, I think stricter teachers are much better than laid back ones because they aren't afraid to push you!. Laid back ones give easier classes that are nice at the time but won't help in the long run!. also, laid back teachers are less inclined to give you the corrections you need because they don't want to come across as being mean!.

I definitely think you should try the studio you're talking about!. If it turns out that the teachers are genuinely mean, nobody's forcing you to stay there!. Best of luck!!Www@QuestionHome@Com

if you mean strict as in mean then probably not, you don't want someone who will always put you down!.
if you mean strict as in someone who works you hard and congratulates you when you do good or better, then that's a pretty strong yes, you want to go to a class and come out feeling you worked hard and did well!.

laid back can sometimes be strict too, but unless you're just looking for something to do on the side it probably isn't best!.

i would suggest watching or taking a class or two at the studio, then make the decision, also ask how many teachers there are there and if possible ask the dancers THERE how strict or hard they are, lastly if the dancers look like they're having fun in class it's always a good sign!.

good luck, and i hope this helps at least a little!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well, I have a strict instructor but she is a great teacher she knows everyones weaknesses and strengths and she wants us to grow as a dancer and the good thing about her is that she knows how to have fun!. If they are strict thats alright but if they are really mean thats not!. The good thing about strict teachers is that they push you to work harder so you learn something its good to have a teacher who is strict when they need to be and easy going when they need to be also =)Www@QuestionHome@Com

usually strict teachers are going to expect you to move at a faster pace!. if you have previous dance experience and are up for a challenge, try the new studio!. if you want to do something with your dancing (ex!. go pro, teach dance, etc) you should probably go with the stricter one because they'll probably be more hard-core and really prepare you for what you'll need to be able to do to acheive your goals!. if you're just starting out or just wanna do it for fun, it'd probably be better to go with a more laid back teacher in my opinion!. of course you can't go by stereotypes!. for example, my teacher is generally very laid back (except when a show is coming up that we aren't really ready for)!. most of the dancers do it just for fun and that's just the way my studio is (there's another one nearby where the more hard-core dancers go)!. however, unlike the general stereotype i provided you with suggests, my teacher is teaching me how to teach and giving me teaching experience so that i can do something with my dancing!. so basically, my point is that every teacher's different and how strict they are with you may depend on how hard you work in class!. the stricter teachers may be more strict with the kids that don't work as hard because they aren't giving 100%!. the more laid back teachers may be more strict with the kids that work the hardest to push them to their full potential because they are taking it more seriously and don't just see it as a hobby!. this could easily be flipped around as well!. you'll never really know how a certain teacher teaches a class until you've danced with them!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

First, "Strict" and "Mean" are not always the same thing!. \

My teacher was very strict, but she loved us dearly and we loved her back!. There were times I thought she was being unfair, unrealistic, or just plain crazy, but I knew it was coming from a place of love!. She had ridiculously high expectations, and pushed her students hard to be more committed, and to work harder than we thought was possible!. She is still one of my best friends and I am glad that she pushed us the way she did!.

I am now a dance teacher and I am not as strict as my teacher was, but I still expect a certain level of commitment, and an adherence to dress code and dance ettiquite that some students perceive as overly strict!. I do however try to be fair, which I believe keeps the perception of "mean-ness" to a minimum!.

The choice between a strict teacher and a laid back teacher really depends on what your goals are!. If you want to pursue dance as a carreer, the strict teacher will (probably) be the better choice, if you are dancing just for fun, the laid back teacher will (probably) be sufficent!.

Your personality is a factor as well, some people work better in a strictly structured environment, others have enough self motivation to create the structure internally!.

the best way to choose a dance teacher is to observe their classes!. call around to a couple of local studios and ask to watch a class!. You will be able to tell where you will fit in the best!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It depends where you want to take your dancing!. When a teacher is passionate about their subject it can be interpreted as "mean" by someone who is just there to pass the time!.
If you are looking for a fun hobby then find a laid back teacher!. If you are thinking about pursuing it seriously then find a teacher whose passion matches your own!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

if ur there to have fun u mite want to have a laid back teacher but my teacher is both ways she can b funny and playful then serious and yelling to the top of her lungs even letting a little curse word out!. but wen she works us to the core and we do a good job she is happy but strict teachers just want to get the full out of u and they wont get that if ur laid bac and relaxed or if they r so strict teachers r good btw our teacher is young in her early 20's so that is better than an old teacher so i wud say go for it and give it ur all if ur there to dance give 110% and dont make her yell r b strict bcuz if u give all u have then there is noo reason to yell or b mean to the studentsWww@QuestionHome@Com
