I started ballroom as an adult and was extremely surprised at how physically demanding it can be!. I used to run competitively and was in very good shape!. I could go a couple miles/kms before even breaking a sweat!. On the dance floor - after a only a couple fast dances (like jive), I can am often sweating!. Look at the couples after ONE dance on Dancing with the Stars!

Physically, ballroom dance contributes to good posture and body alignment, it encourages gentle stretching, increases your flexibility and stamina, and benefits your cardiovascular system!.

Ballroom dancing (not competitively) is a great way to meet people (friend a/o romantic partners)!. "May I have this dance!?" is music to nearly any woman's ears, and a fabulous icebreaker for any man!. If you alrady have a partner, it's a great way to reconnect!.

I started doing ballroom classes when I was 10 and have been doing it for the past 7 years!. Apart from the fitness aspect of dancing, it also helps build muscle tone!. I have leg muscle from all the dancing, arm muscle from keeping my arms up and holding my frame, and great back and core muscles from keeping a straight back and holding myself up!. I have the best posture of anyone I know! And thats not even from competitive dancing, just from social dancing!. It's also a great way to meet new people and make new friends while getting fit, and a lot more fun than running or going to the gym :PWww@QuestionHome@Com

When I just started ballroom, I dropped excessive 20 lbs that I've put on during school exams!. Furthermore, I've learned to stretch my back using my own musces!. Back pain that many of get from sitting at the desk is a thing of the past for me!. Yeah, I know I was too young to have it in the first place, but somehow I did!. I feel great, I look great and I get to wear stunning outfits for competitions!.
It helps me to maintain overall fitness level without ever getting bored!.
On a personal level, I've learned to give and receive constructive feedback from my partners and teachers!. Working with a human being who may be just as frustrated as I am requires a lot of patience and positive attitude!. It comes handy in various life situations!.

As for statistics and facts - I've heard it somewhere that a dancesport athlete expends the same kind of energy in a dance round as a 400 m runner!.
