There aren't really any rules, but let me suggest you look at some YouTube clips of tango dancers!. You'll notice his left and her right hand are held, and his right hand is around in the center of her back, more or less (this along with what she does with her left hand are variable, and part of that has to do with how close you want to get to your partner)!.
I'd suggest that the two of you might do better to start with something similar to that hold!. It's quite functional!. One of the positives of it is that it, like the classic ballroom hold, will have you offset a little to your partner's left, so your feet aren't in each others' way!. It saves on the toes, not having to worry about stepping on each other!.
The man's job is to lead, and it's your job to feel where he's going and follow!. This takes practice, but really it boils down to pretty simple options: if his weight is on his right foot, he's going to move his left, and it can only go forward, back, or to the side, so you should be able to figure out the limited options!. Most people spend the majority of their time just swaying back and forth anyway, so you needn't over-think this stuff!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

just take your shirt off, and he will be happy!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I didn't think there was really anything to it!. You basically hold each other and sway to the music without stepping on each other's toes!.

edit: one hand upper back, other hand on the waist!. you're over thinking this!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
