Position:Home>Dancing> Cheerleading...??

Question:I'm basically goin 2 start cheerleading next year, but I want to prepare myself for it. I'm doing track, and bought some instructional vids (altho they wont b in 4 another week or 2), but what else could I do? I can't do anything, like go to a yoga or ballet class, bcuz the town I live in iz so small, that they don't have places like that. How else could I prepare myself at home(gyms arent open after school so home iz the only other option)?

Well it really depends on what level you are to decide on what you should know before tryouts. If its middle school, they dont always expect you to know everything. You should know the motions (high v, low v, t, touchdown, low touch down, daggers, buckets, candlesticks, broken t) you should know the jumps (toe touch, herkie(left and right), pike) and you should be able to execute each with proper technique.

-For Jumps: Show good flexibility, Height, and POINTED TOES! [:
-For Motions: SHARP! and the right motions.

you might want to also have a knowledge (or even execute) some tumbling skills. You should know what a roundoff is, and beable to execute it. You should also KNOW what a backhandspring is, and what a back tuck is, although those you may not want to execute without proper training or experience.
ALSO, know what a half (a.k.a. a "prep") is, a full extension (full) and a liberty (lib) . For expanded knowledge (mainly if your a flyer), know what a scorpion, heelstretch, bow'n'arrow, scale and arabesque are.

Tips (mainly for tryouts):
1. Start stretching, jumping, and executing motions now. (and learning them). You also should do pushups, situps (or crunches), and leg lifts (or squats) now. You should have somewhat toned muscles for tryouts.
2. At your tryouts, dont be shy. Dont hide in the back, because you can only try out once. (well, per year) DONT BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS! [:
3. Dont psyche yourself out. Try to focus on one skill and make it really good for tryouts so that although you may not have tumbling, you will have a good jump, or good motions.
4.Be willing to try everything, as long as you know youre capable of it. DONT SAY I CANT OR I WONT ! thats a turnoff[:
5.Make eye-contact with the judges, and keep your energy up! Make sure you get the judges attention!
6. HAVE FUN! the judges like seeing girls(or guys) that know how to have fun. and SMILE! =]=]=]=]
7.if you make a mistake, just ignore it. The worst thing to do is make a big deal out of it.
8. Dont wear jewelry, pull your hair back, and try to have clean (and cut!) nails.

  • You're probably not expected to come into cheerleading with full knowledge of it. Just watch instructional vids (there also may be some on YouTube) and exercise to keep yourself in shape.

You could always ask a cheerleader to help you with your moves. I'm sure they would love to help you out!

do a lot of stretching so you can be flexible, so you can do a toe-touch, etc.

stretch every day and be as loud as you can at tryouts!

You can start working on stretching, motions, jumps and so forth. There are instructions, pictures, and videos for all of them here: http://aescougarcheer.com/Cheer101/basic...

    Good luck!
