Position:Home>Dancing> Drill team help?!?

Question:okay, so I'm in eighth grade and I'm trying out for drill team. I have to know how to do piroutes ( don't know how to spell), and other basic ballet and jazz moves. I did cheer this year so I have some dance experience. I can do the splits. I just was wondering if there is anything to prepare myself for drill and what extra things I should know. I also just pulled a muscle and can barely kick. Is there anything to do to speed the process of healing. I really really really want to make it. So, please tell me anything to do to improve and to help me make sure I make it. Thank you!

well i was also on my school's drill team. it's so much hard work but so much fun and really pays off! i'm just going to tell you now that the tryouts will be SO much harder then actually making the team, so don't be discouraged. you will probably have to learn four routines. a short, across the floor routine that will include both left & right leaps and side leaps and maybe some other stuff...this will probably be a jazz like routine...so make sure you make BIG (if you feel silly you're doing it right) facial expressions and show your style & attitude. the next will most likely be a lyrical routine. if you are not in dance classes already, i would reccomend you sign up for a lyrical & ballet class to help you with this, because you are going to need the technique to do this right. lyrical is much harder than it looks, the trick is using emotion and the right tecnique to make it look easy. if you can't take classes then maybe as a friend who is on the team already or who is in dance to help you. the last two routines will be hip hop & kick. for hip hop you have to really show attitude, make 'gangster' faces haha. work on getting low, making the moves tight and working on isolations *which i'm sure you'll be fine since you were in cheer*. and finally for kick, the same thing with pulling a muscle happened to me in my first year of trying out! icy hot, ice packs and hot baths are your friend in the process of healing...also keep stretching it so you don't lose the flexibilty on that leg. make sure that you tell them that your kicks & splits will be bad on that leg because you pulled a muscle...i know some coaches seem unaproachable but just trust me on this one. remember to keep your hips square, point your toes and keep your shoulders back while kicking. they will also want to see your pirouttes, fouettes, and alice ciccones. even if you can not do these perfectly, an attempt is better than nothing. make sure you pull up during these turns and spotting is key. during tryouts listen to the coaches or whoever is instructing you. don't talk when they are talking and make sure you have a great attitude. ask for help when you need it...they are there to help you. woahh i just wrote you like a novel, i'm sorry but i hope this helps you because i hope you make the team! good luck and feel free to ask me any more questions

i think you have everything you need and all you can do for your leg is give it rest... how many pirouettes can you do?

you need to be able to @least do a double ((2 pioruettes))- good left/rite leap-an axle- splits- sorry, but most tryouts requier 2 eight counts of high kicks. just rest your leg and hope it gets better!!

It seems like you would be really good at drill, I did drill my sopohmore, and junior years of high school it was the best piroutes are necassary of course but threw the seasons you will learn how to do doubles and tripples. I remember as I went to the football and basketball games and say there half time rountines I kept praticing cuz i want to be like them and i had no cheer or dancing experience so you will probaly make it.
Hope you make it
