Question Home

Position:Home>Dancing> How to get my parents to let me dance?

Question:Jenny. Sixteen. I found passion for dancing.

Problem:
> My mother is stubborn; doesn't believe in dance or art
> My mother is totally against hip-hop/breakdance styles (which I want to learn)
> Dance studios are at least a 30-45 minute drives away
> When I even mention "I want to dance", she stops speaking to me
> I don't have my license yet

On the other side:
+ I have a good freelance artist job that pays good money (~$14/hr)
+ I've never asked or begged my parents for something or to buy something; this is the first thing I'm asking for in a decade
+ Straight A student, +4.0 GPA, 5 AP classes at the moment

Really brief, to the point--but really in need of help!
Best answer WILL be rewarded! Thanks :<

instead of bringing it up in regular conversation, take your mom alone in a room and explain to her tht you really want to do this and if she says no then

save up your money from your job for awile intell you have enough to pay for cab drives and classes for 1 month and do it for that one month putting lots of effort into it and that should show your parents your not just doing it on a whim

EASY

wait two years and then do what you want.

Honor your mother and father. They do know what is best.

At 16 you think your parents are dumb, by the time you reach 35 you will realize they are very smart.

You are still a kid living under your parents roof. When you grow up, graduate from high school and move out on your own. Well then you can dance. Until then your mommy is in charge and you are not. Stinks to be a little kid dont it.

Get a good dance video and learn at home for now.

I recommend Dancing with the Groovaloos.

It's tough when your parents don't believe in dance or art. My dad used to beat us if he caught us listening to rock and roll. He forbade us to dance.

Have hope that once you move out, you can do what you want.

Ask her about other styles like ballet. Even though it's not hip hop, it will help.

Show her the Groovaloos video. It's cute. Not nasty or trashy or thuggy but it's hip hop, locking, B boying (breaking)

Google Groovaloos

Make your mom watch two movies:

1.) Footloose...Kevin Bacon in the 80's, and

2.) Girls Just Wanna Have Fun...Sarah Jessica Parker and Helen Hunt, also an 80's movie.

Maybe she'll she how silly she's being and realize that you will do it anyway so she might as well give you some support!!

Let your mother to convince more.....that you love to dance....Don't be afraid her.......convince your mother if she can teach you on how to dance why you don't tell her that you want a tutor to teach on how to dance....
