Position:Home>Dancing> How young do you have to be to learn pointe?

Question:I've noticed that some gyms and studios are offering adult ballet classes for beginners. Obviously those that start ballet at age 25-30 or older won't have a career in ballet, but I'd still love to learn it to improve my coordination and flexibility. I was wondering, would (after taking classes for a couple of years or how ever many years I'd need to) I still be able to learn point at my age? I'm 25 years old and I would start lessons when I move back to the United States (I live in Italy at the moment) in a year and a half, I'll be 27 then. Thanks!

Hey welcome to dance! It's so much fun. I would recommend doing at LEAST 4 or 5 years of ballet before even considering Pointe. If you start pointe too early, you could have serious foot problems when you get older. I started ballet when I was around 10, and went on pointe when I was 14. I can't stress enough to do ballet for a long time before going on pointe, and it also kills your feet more than you could know. Prepare for a lot of blisters!

I think it would depend on your studio, but I don't see a reason why you couldn't go on pointe. Most adults just don't want to. They don't see a reason to tear up their feet and be in pain if they don't want to be professional. But I'm sure that if you wanted to go on pointe, you could. Just ask the studio that you'd like to take class at once you get back to the States.

well...there really isn't any age to start ballet or pointe. It just depends on how much your willing to work. Generally someone who has done ballet for no less than two or three years may be suitable for pointe.

good luck =]

I started to learn pointe in my late 20's. I am now 33 years old. You just need many years of ballet behind you and your dance teacher needs to look to see if you are ready for pointe. They may also give you pre pointe barre exercises. Work on your ballet; you never know. Best Wishes. I hope that I helped you out a little.

Ballet is wonderful exercise because it elongates the muscles and provides wonderful flexibility. Learning Pointe is not about age, it is about having built up the proper muscles and deveopment before you start. I started ballet at the age of six and took lessons from a professional ballerina. I studied for 20 years and started pointe when I had the endurance and muscles in my ankles to be able to go up on full pointe, for me, about the age of 12. It will depend on how often and intense your ballet classes are and how quickly you develope the proper muscles. If you go on pointe too quickly without the proper basica and technique you can damage your feet, ankles and body.

It's not always about your age, but your ability. As long as you work hard and and condition your muscles properly, there should be no reason why you can't do pointe. So, technically you decide if you can do pointe and when it will be. The harder you work the sooner it will be. Just make sure you find a teacher who truly knows what she/he is doing so you don't injure yourself. ;) Good luck!

To begin pointe, the ankles of the dancer must be strong. It's usually recommended and evaluated by the teacher when the student is ready. If your toes are up to it and your ankles and arches are strong, then go for it!

The ideal age if one has been taking ballet/pointe since a young age is 10-12, but most studios put girls on much younger than that. It can damage thier feet, so it's much better to begin pointe once your feet are fully developed.

NO ONE IS EVER TO OLD TO SSTART BALLET/POINTE!!!!!!!!

:)

alot of dancers that do pointe start young at like age 12. because thats when their feet are really developed. i guess its okay to start now though. i know that they do offer adult classes at most studios so i encourage you to do it. good luck to you!!! ( - 8*

it doesn't realy matter as long as your dance teacher thinks you're ready. But most start between the ages of 10 and 15
