Position:Home>Dancing> When you do pointe shoes, do you go up on the toes or just a demi point?

Question:Hi, I'm in grade 4 ballet right now. We were told that if we could complete our demi points and that, we could do up to pointe shoes next year, so I was wondering if when you do pointe shoes, you go up on your toes or demi point?

When you go en pointe, you are standing on the tips of your toes. The shoes have a hard tip, called the box, that supports your toes as well as a hard but flexible sole, called the shank, that supports your arch. You should do a lot more research before you start, though. Talk to your teacher and watch other girls who are already en pointe.

u probaly wouldnt go up 2 the very top at ur age but the most talented go up 2 demi

I'm in Level 4, too. (But I'm not sure if our levels and your grades are the same.) I've been going all the way up since level 3. :) It hurts especially when I'm tired but it feels great. Just remember that when you're en pointe, think of your shoe as part of your foot, your leg. One with your body. And pull up! And forget about it. Just dance with it. :) btw, it also helps when you imagine your fave ballerinas dancing. It helps you fly like they do. :) lol

It's an amazing feeling. Good luck with that! :)

For the most part you'll want to be on demi when you start but the proper way is fully up on toe you will get use to it over time and it will hurt but its such a beautiful and graceful feeling!

Hi, I'm on grade 4 too. When you first get pointes, your told to go onto demi for a few weeks maybe a month to get your feet used to pointe shoes and to strenghten the muscles in your toes and ankles. Also at the start of your pointe lessons you will probably do demi excersises to warm up your feet in those lessons. After a few weeks however your ballet teacher will probably start doing excersises with you on points and then gradually start to learn dances with them. It is a very long process. Also it will be a while about 3 yrs before you will be doing exams. I started pointes when i was 11 and im now 14 and still havent done an exam yet! Hope i helped

Well, if it was jut demi-pointe, we wouldn't need special shoes, silly! In pointe shoes you go all the way up through demi-pointe, and onto your toes. Or, mostly your toe. Most of your weight should be on your big toe.

btw, congrats on getting to do pointe soon!

you go alll the way up, on the tips on your toes, but don't try it until you're ready and in pointe shoes. Otherwise, you can really hurt you toes

In pointe, you need to roll through demi until youre on full pointe, however, when youre learning, you're teacher may have you do most of the exercises in demi. Its an unusual practice, but I can see the point. You will notice that you can't go on full demi in pointe shoes, the shank doesn't bend that way.

Actually reading your question, is your teacher saying she wants you to use demis? Like, the shoes? if so, its a shankledd pointe shoe to introduce the feeling of the box and crown...and it CANNOT support you safely en pointe. This is a much more common practice.
