a dance from the 1920's almost all movies from the 20's show it, it was also in the musical chicago

named for the city of charleston south carolina, developed in the african american community, it is most often associated with white american flappers, due to a song written by composer james p johnson in 1923 in abroadway play. tha flappers were women who danced to mock the "drys" who were people who supported prohobition (ban on sale and consumption of liquor, now repealed) as the city of charleston at that time was considered quite immoral and provocative. the basic dance has 8 steps and could be dance alone or with a partner. see wikipedia.

Charleston is a vintage 8 beat dance that was popular in the early 1900's before Lindy Hop. It was done to fast music and could either be danced in pairs or solo.
