Position:Home>Dancing> How do I get better at dance when I have had very little experience?

Question:I'm 13 and I just started dancing this year. I'm doing Jazz 3 and I need to learn how to be more flexible, I want to get better at Jazz walks, and I just want to be a better dancer in general. I really want advice because I love to dance, I'm just afraid that I started too late. I might even want to start teaching kids how to dance when I'm in college, but I REALLY need help!

Thanks for your time. =)

I did the exact same thing. I joined when I was 14, and was terrified that everyone else would be super good if they had been dancing since 5 years old. DON'T do what I did, and that was this: At the beginning, I was like, "Oh I am new, and so obviously I can't do what the rest of the dancers are doing." But then two years later, I was STILL saying that. And seriously, this happens! Even when I could do a move, I just thought I must have been doing it wrong, because I was new. This is not true!
You just have to think, "Hey, some of these girls HAVE been dancing since 5 years of age, but some also are relatively new just like me. And some of them do NOT want it as bad as me, so I can pass them in talent."
Make sure you don't hide at the back of the class, or take your turn last. Make sure if you don't understand, that you ask another dancer who you see doing it right, or the teacher (if she isn't busy). This is also how you are going to make friends in the class and therefore gain confidence. If you don't know the other dancers at all, then it's going to be awfully difficult to try a hard move, because you don't want to mess up in front of a bunch of strangers. If you get to know them, then you can laugh at yourself with them.
And try stretching all the time at home or trying to remember a new move. For eg. every night, at a certain time I would try to do the splits. It took a lottt of nights in a row to get it, but if I gave up or forgot for a few days, I was practically back at square one.
OK hope this helps! good luck
