Position:Home>Dancing> Wanting to start dance class, but don't want to wear the leotard! What can i

Question:I've always wanted to dance, any kind of dance, and now I've decided that I'm gonna to. But I dont want to wear the leotard that some dance class' require.
I'm an adult guy, but don't know if there's much difference in the leotards between the guys and girls. (i don't even know what the girls type are!)
I'm a well built guy and I'm afraid that a leo and tights might... embarass me. I'm thinking of taking ballet, tap, or jazz. It depends who else is taking it as well.

Any advice would be much appricated. More so from actual girls and guys who dance and are in my posistion, and how it worked out. Thanks so much!

Guys usually wear a dance belt (think similar to a jock strap) which should help. Then you can wear long pants - usually the men in my classes have worn jazz pants that are close fitting, but not so tight they show off everything. Something with lycra so you can move is best. For tops they wear t-shirts that are fitted - again not plastered to their skin, but not big and baggy either. You want the teacher to be able to see your lines to give you corrections when needed.

Talk to the school when you sign up and they can give you some advice as well. Every school has different requirements, but most of the schools I've taken at give guys a bit more leeway since the ratio of men to women is so lopsided. You want to be comfortable and have ease of motion, but part of feeling comfortable is NOT feeling self conscious so wear what makes you feel most confident - then, remember everyone is usually so focused on themselves in class they won't be paying much attention to you ;)

Cycling shorts & a t-shirt is acceptable for a guy to wear in dance class.

wear a PE kit

unless you're going to a professional school of dance you probably won't have to wear a leotard
but just in case go for tap or jazz instead of ballet
:]

Use a track suit.

aww don't worry! guys don't wear leotards!! they wear tightish black pants and a white shirt.. they can wear tights but thats usually when performing

i go to an informal dance studio.. the guys there wear long short jeans and a t-shirt! i dont know how they move in it but i guess they do

buy a funky leotard that you like, or if they won't let you wear loud colors, then you could try like knit bicycles shorts or something more sporty? Oh, you can buy something like a jumpsuit, it's lose fitting, it's classical, and usually the teachers or instructors wear them, but you could get away with it. they are usually black and you can find them in like discount dance wear catalog or on-line. they kind of look like overalls or a jump suit but made out of cotton or something. you could also wear a white t-shirt underneath. That would look very classic. You could also sew your own jump suits if you can't find the right size, make sure you use a stretchy fabric.

to be honest if you want to make a career or dance, or at least perform, you will have to wear a leatord at some time. but if your rehersing or taking lessons then wear mens jazz pants and just a regular t-shirt.
Im a girl who dances a lot and im quite big chested so i dont always feel comfortbale in a leotard, but when i start to dance i love it so much i forget. I only wear leotards in shows, and at lessons i wear my dance schools t-shirt, and jazz pants and legwarmers.

Hey.
I know what your feeling, way too tight and revealing! Practically everyone feels that way, so I would recommend take contemporary as it is more open, so you could simply wear a t-shirt and trackies!
Hope you have fun.

most dance schools dont require guys to wear leotards for lessons anyway :) you may have to for exams if you take them or for shows which isnt an everyday thing. the guys in my dance school have to wear a white t-shirt and any style of jazz pants so some of them wear loose fitting pants
so just enquire and the schools you want to go to and see what they say :)
