Hiyah. I'm a complete beginner too, turning 21 this year. I just started ballet last october, was also recommended to join a grade 6 class (RAD syllabus.) They probably suggested that because of age.

In the beginning, you'll find it quite hard to catch up. I suggest reading up online to learn ballet terms, else it's difficult to understand the teacher if she uses mainly french terms. Try also checking out what are the 1st to 5th positions of arms and feet.

Persevere on! Grade 6 work is really nice, and it's great to start with for a mature dancer. Grade 5 and below work consists mainly of steps, while grade 6 work is really 'dancey'. There's a lot more expression involved, which is great when you're starting. Technique is still important, but you'll feel more like you're truly doing ballet in grade 6 as opposed to lower grades.

Stuff you need: leotard, skirt for classical work and ballet shoes. A long scarf (I bought 1m by 2m, but I think it depends on height), preferable silk/chiffonish material for free movement (free movement section is something like modern dance.) A pair of character shoes (they're black with a heel) for character work.

This is ONLY my 2ed yr of dancing. last yr i was in a class with 8 yr olds (i was 13) not fun....I did soooo good last yr that they wanted to move me up 4 levels!!!! It is about the middle of the spring term and she wants me to get my pointe shoes!!!! It is REALLY REALLY good that u are being put in gr.6 class, it means she knows u can be a GREAT dancer!!! good luck!

I say that you should try it out for a while, just to get the feel for it. And if you feel uncomfortable with the level of technique then move down a level... But if you were told to join the grade 6 class, then I would definitely go for it. Its obvious that whoever told you to join grade 6 believes that you, even as a beginner, are capable coping with the exercises!! Good Luck!!
