Realistically, you probably can't make a career out of dancing for a major dance company. But there is not reason why you can't get the training and maybe one day teach dance. There is no reason why you can't just have ballet as a passionate hobby.

But 23, even with years of experience is a little old to be a professional ballet dancer. But you can do it, for yourself- not for anyone else. The best dancers dance for personal enjoyment, not for anyone else.

You should do both. Get real in that you will most likely (like 99.9%) not make a career out of dancing, but pursue it because you should pursue all of your dreams, albeit with realistic expectations. I'm 23 myself, and at this age, we can still get damned good at new things we start, but we'll never be as good as someone who's been doing it since they were 6 or 7. Or even 16 or 17 for that matter. Fact of life. That said, you should still pursue it for your own well being and benefit. Just keep your expectations modest and do it for yourself. Good luck!

Having read your question, the good news is that you can learn ballet but you will never be a great dancer.

The bad news is that you are too old and your bones have set..
Most ballerinas start when they are young, aged 6 or 7. This is because ballet requires great flexibility.

However, do not let this deter you. You should always follow your dreams.

You definitely can! Just take an adults beginners Ballet class and start living that dream :)

Please don't listen to the person above me; you can be a great dancer! But it is true that you won't be able to become a professional ballet dancer, but this should not stop you from taking some classes!

Hope this helps! Good Luck :)

there's a very small chance that you will be able to become professional, but that shouldn't keep you from doing what you love! jump right in a have a great time!

by the way, i hope that there's a good teacher in Dubai, i live in Dhahran, KSA, and there's only one really good ballet teacher over here.

Break a leg!

It is never to late to learn ballet, however your are too old and you have stated that you do not have a dancer's physique both of which will prevent you from ever becoming a professional ballerina. Go ahead and take dance classes. In the effort to become a dancer, you will find fitness, poise, self-confidence, dicipline, all of which will help you to become a better human being

Wow! A fellow spirit! I'm 21, I started in grade 6 ballet last october! By the way, I'm 63 kg, 1.62m. It really depends. In the beginning I did feel pretty depressed because everyone in the class was better than me. Also, I really felt FAT in the awfully skintight leotard.

But I got used to it. I really love dance! At my level, expression etc matters a lot more than just pure technique (although that's also important.) I dance of the pure joy of it. I might not look good as a dancer, or even as good as everyone else, but I really enjoy dancing.

Also, I recently figured out how to do a proper pirouette en dedans... the sense of accomplishment I got was something that I've never felt before. I swear I was on a 'high' for like 1 week or so (until I screwed up the pirouette en dehor :D)

About flexibility: It can be trained. Proof: Failed sit and reach physical fitness test before balet, I can now do both front and back splits.

About going on pointe: I forced my teacher to be honest. I won't be going on pointe for at least another year, but she also said that I'll eventually get there provided I do proper strengthening.

Go for it. Better to have tried and realised it's not for you/you don't like it, than to have never tried at all. Get a good teacher and discuss your worries with her. Mine gave me lots of personal tips.

I say go for it!!! Or else you will live your life wondering what might have been! I mean, you may not end up being a professional ballerina, but there are a million other opportunities out there! And you're still young!! Take some dance classes, try it out for a while, you never know what path it might lead you down.

for fun, yeah you can. as long as u go to a beginners' adult class. otherwise its really awkward when you go to a class and ur da only one who duznt no wut the hell their doing.... good luck!
