Position:Home>Dancing> Hi. I am a male dancer who has been trying to do lifts. Any tips or advice about

Question:I'm a guy dancer (amateur) - I have a few tips...ones I got from every male dance teacher I worked with
1) The core of your lift is your back....keep it straight and strong
2) The second most important thing is your legs. Use them for the lift, not just your arms
3) Yes, you do need arm strength, but you can do really well by holding your partner close to your body - keep your elbows in!
4) Have your dance partner jump into the lift - experienced women out there know what I am talking about....the first thing to say to your new partner is JUMP INTO THE LIFT! Almost every woman new to partnering will expect you to lift her....NO! she MUST jump into the lift. I have partnered women over 6' tall and 165lbs (yeah, I was sort of a big guy back when...but it can be done).
5) Some of the lifts can be helped along by your partner holding on to you and helping...just remember your legs and keep your back straight
6) Remember and let your partner know that your hands might (and will) slip occasionally - it happens all the time to all dancers. Remind her that your are dancing and that you are not trying to get a "free feel" - (and if you are, I hope your partner's bf beats the crap out of you LOL;-). It is better be accidentally groped than dropped.

Hope this helps - Good Luck

hey im a girl dancer who does many lifts in shows. my advice would be to work out!!! really work out the arms and the legs so that the girl is comfortable with you and willing to trust that you aren't going to drop her. remember that when doing the stunt it really is all about the girl do everything you can to make sure that she is comfortable and never drop her. do whatever you have to do inorder to avoid dropping her!! good luck stunts are amazing when you have a good partner and can trust them!

Arms are key. You need to have good arms to lift you partner. Work out alot, and make sure you can lift your own body weight before you try and lift someone elses. Do push-ups and pull-ups until you are sure you can. Also, try holding your partner in the air in front of you so you are sure you can partner her. Just make sure that you have what it takes before you try anything to trickey, or you better be able to catch her.

Good Luck!!

make sure that your partner really trusts you. im one of the stronger girls on my team so im always the base person and the stunts never work whenever my partner doesnt fully trust me. if trust is a problem i would practice some trust exercises such as the falling backwards and you catching her. also be sure that you are strong enough to hold her and not in pain when you do. it usually helps if you bend your legs a little while in the process of lifting b/c it will give you more balance.
