What do you do if a boy asks you to a dance but you can't make it but really

She needs to explain the situation exactly the way it is. She needs to tell him the whole story and not hide any of it so that she doesn't feel guilty and he knows exactly what is going on. She should come up with an alternate date to the movies with a group of friends ( a group because she is a little young) or somewhere else with a group of people. He needs to know that she does like him or apreciates him, so that he doesn't think that she is just bailing out. If she does this giving an alternate date then she should get to him and make him feel better inside.

The girl should be honest and explain why she can't make it. If she is worried he might think she is making an excuse not to go, it might help if she can reciprocate the invitation, by inviting him to something else at a later date!

I agree with the above. If she has to say no, then suggest something else on another day and that will let him know that she is interested but that is not a good time. Real easy.

If you are both 10, then you don't have to worry about dating and such. Just say that you really would like to go with him, but you're doing something else on the day of the dance. Oh, and wait a few more years before you have a boyfriend. Believe me, it's not fun after your heart is broken, and you'll be more able to deal with it at an older age.
