my only idea is that it originated because alot of the attire is similar... dressing like a woman would get many a man titled gay. i dont really know why though. i have danced with many straight and gay guys and i have never understood it.
it also could be because of the old idea that woman were to please the men, and dancing was a very aethsetic way of entertainent wereas seen to be feminine as opposed to masculin

I have no idea, but I love seeing guys do ballet. I think some guys are afraid to because they think others will think they're gay or something ( I hate stereotypes ) but when guys actually reach out for what they wanna do.. it's amazing. Dance is amazing.

don't know where or how it started.
they assume you're gay if a guy does ballet but i honestly find it attractive when guys dance.
i guess its the movement of ballet and the 'gentle' and 'soft' moves that imply femininity.

Where did the cliche start? I don't think anyone knows.I mean,it just sort of "grew" the way mean gossips does, taking on a life of it's own. It's only in the last few decades that male dancers(especially ballet dancers) are less likley to be assumed to be gay(not that it should matter anyway)but, yes, the world is changing, little by little, especially with the advent of very"male"dancers like Edward Villella(my hero)Mikeal Barishnikov and others, notorius ladies men, every one.

guys dancing around in tights, acting all feminine. I guess that's where it came from. You usually don't see guys being portrayed in that kind of role. There's nothing wrong with guys dancing, but I just think that having a guy in tights doing all these feminine moves tends to set up the viewers mind into thinking that they are "gay." But I mean if ballet is your passion, by all means pursue it. good day.

i am not sure how that stereotype started. i find it really sad, honestly. guys who do ballet ROCK! and CAN be straight. i think that people who start/continue these stereotypes need to move on and let others do what they please.... plus, what does it matter to their dancing anyway?

KEEP DANCING!!! :-)

hum, probably from some ignorant person that wouldn't accept that a guy could do ballet, and that if he did he'd have to be gay b/c why would a straight guy do something that takes so much control, focus and dedication??
i don't feel this way, i love watching guys do ballet, one of my guy friends is a dancer and he is amazing to watch.

They are gay. Small .... because of the tight tights.

It was actually men whe were wearing tights and dancing ballet before the women. The guys weren't dressing like girls at that time in history.

i think just because most people see ballet as so graceful and many people don't think of men as being graceful, at least not as much as a woman so ballet is then considered feminine to most people. then, obviously if guys do something that is remotely considered feminine then they are gay. i personally think it's stupid and who really cares if someone is gay i mean come on.

you know, i always wonder that. some are gay, but others either just love to dance or are really smart (they get to watch pretty girls prance around in leostards!)

but i think guy dancers are kewl.
