For turnout, you're supposed to use your inner thighs, butt, and stomach.

Dancers suffer injuries in the ankle most often because they're either not pointing their feet (not pointing correctly or at all) or are tired and trip up, twisting their ankles. Another common way to injure your ankle is to fall in poite shoes, qhich is often a result of being put in pointe shoes too early.

Your calves, foot and toe muscles, and hamstrings help you get off the ground. Many people think their thighs get them off the ground more than any other muscle, but you shoudn't use them more than is absolutely necessary. You'll end up with bad technique and big thighs. What makes the difference between a high jump and a low jump is how much a dancer pushes through their calves, then feet, then toes.
