I know that Suzanne Farrell, from NYCB had to have both knees replaced when she was 44. Try the new injections first. They were not available for Miss Farrell.

My dance teachers mum who competed at blackpool (Worlds top ballroom competition) is around 85 has had hips replacements. And my teacher who is a very young 50, he has had 1 knee replacement and he said his other knee isnt doing too well at the moment so may eventually need that done

One of my dance teachers wound up having to get surgery on his feet. Only two years later, and he's having to get surgery again! Apparently, since he dances 6 days/week, the wear and tear has happened at a quicker rate than it would in the average non-dancing individual. He is in his late 40's. None of my other instructors or friends (in ballroom dance) have needed significant surgery as a result of dance related stress/injury. Just like many other performance sports, I imagine we have a slightly higher incidence of these injuries than the general populace but I don't think it's common.

I hope this helps. Good luck!!!
