Position:Home>Dancing> How is a typical tap dance class like?

Question:I've been taking tap dance since a year ago, starting with an 8-session beginner class in which they took us through the basics steps. Then we moved on to Tap 2 which is on-going. We've been practising turns and slap-ups and very occassionally a tap routine which we will follow will next 2 or 3 classes. I still haven't master the turns and slap-ups but because the content of the classes doesn't change, I began to feel bored and now is now looking for other schools. I don't want to be stuck with practising those techniques forever, you see. There seems to be very limited options in my area for me to compare.

Is that is how typical tap classes are like (work the same techniques over and over again) or is it supposed to be more fun?

i teach the most advanced level of tap at my academy and i can give you a run down of what we do, and maybe it will help. first we do warm-up (just to tap combinations), then we run through wings, one-footed wings, all the different types of pullbacks, and we are working our way up to one-footed toe-stand pullbacks. then i teach 1 or 2 new combinations, then we break and work on a routine to music. i usually try different types of tap, different fun music. it seems like some tap can be the same if you dont mix it up. i try to not put in old combinations, like time steps or soft-shoe. i think my students get tired of these so i make up my own stuff usually. it sounds to me like your teacher isnt adding any new stuff. if i was you i would just try another class at a different studio and see what you think. i think all of my students get bored if i dont mix things up, and tap can be a lot of fun with the right teacher. even in the early stages of tap, it should be fun. good luck and i hope things work out for you!

I've been tapping for what seems like forever, and I'm now a tap teacher. I can tell you that is definately not normal. Something like that makes it sound like maybe your teacher doesn't really know what they're doing. You should definately be progressing to different and more difficult steps at this stage in the game. I think if you switched to another studio or another class you would have much more fun learning new steps and being challenged a little bit.

Have fun and good luck with your tapping!

I took tap for 8 years. I got board with it, I never got to be in Charater heels till I got into high school. Yes, I agree, everything is the same steps over and over and over again. Have you asked the teacher if there are new steps to learn? It took me a long while to ask how to do time steps. Now I love em let alone, wings.

I'd start looking for new dance schools if this doesn't help. :)

i have been taking tap, jazz, ballet scince i was 4 i realized that if u dont enjoy it and have fun with it U WILL HATE IT trust me i just moved from a to a new dance studieo and now i like dance all together more because im having fun and i am dancing to more modern music. well if u want it to be fun u have to practice and if u have mastered some step do somthing to show off and maybe they bring u up to the next levle. ITS YOUR TURN TO SHINE!!

Dance classes are typically filled with working the basic steps, especially in a beginner's class. I realize that you are now in the next level, but it is still beginners. They then start to build the steps you have learned into routines that you can perform, to show you how to blend the steps together. I think also, that because you haven't mastered some of techniques, it might make it seem more boring, because you are still too focused on learning the steps that you can't really enjoy the dancing. I would say that if you are bored, you might want to try different dance classes, jazz, or hip hop, ballet, ect.
