Position:Home>Dancing> I'm a good dancer but I can't memorize routines... PLEASE HELP?

Question:Once I know the steps I'm fine but I'm really bad at getting them down. Does anybody know any tips on how to memorize steps faster. I have an audition for my school musical coming up and I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

I had this problem and I use to have to work after class sometimes with my teachers or go into the studio when they would have extra time to work with me.

Best thing is remember a piece of the dance and work on that all week long and then learn another piece of the dance and just work on pieces until you can put the whole thing together. Good Luck!

just practice in front of a mirror so u can have a visual of what the steps should look like. everyone has some kind of a photographic memory.

Practice is the only answer. When you are at home try running through the routine on your own until it becomes natural. Try making up a little simple story to describe the steps like when you are doing a straight couple of steps forward remember that as 'going for a walk' then expand to describe what you could be doing for the next step and so on.

Sometimes creating your own routine causes you to remember better. It's like when you have your own idea; how can you forget your own idea? If you can't do your own routine, then use memory markers to remember the steps. Like for every move in sequence remember a marker like: move 1 mom, move 2 dad and so on...

practice it over and over til ya get it!

I'm not a dancer, but I've had to learn choreography for a couple of shows. I always hated the "1 and 2 and 3 and 4" thing-it throws me off. I did alot better when I connected the steps with the music and the words. Maybe this will help you?

Ask questions as it's being taught. The only way to get it through your body is to practice, practice, practice. Once you get a break or get home, right down all of the steps and go through it a lot. Don't be nervous. Your nerves can get the best of you if you let them.

practice, practice, practice. mirrors will help, you can see how you are doing and what needs improvement in mirrors as well. Good luck on the auditions! hope you get the part!
