Age of ballroom dancers varies from 6 years old to 100 years old. There are 2 large (overlapping) groups of ballroom dancers. One is competitive dancers, where people to be younger, probably 20 on average. One way or another, Adult Championship is all in their 20s or early 30s. The other group is social dancers, where I'd estimate the average to be around 50. Social dance classes are a lot more common than competitive. So if you came across one of those this is probably why. You can try to find ballroom classes in your local colledge. Usually, you don't need to be a student to enroll in these classes. They tend to have younger crowd. Other than that - you just have to stick with it for a beginner level, and if you decide that you want to take competitive level classes you will find those a lot more demanding and much younger on avearge.

I do find that the average ballroom dancer is of an older age. Many start learning around mid-20s to early 30s from my experiences. The lessons can get expensive and you'd need to be financially stable. If you happen to take classes at a college, then you will be more likely to find a greater number of people around that age.

In your case, you're taking class to learn how to dance better. You don't need to dance with people around the same age. You can wait until you go to general dance parties to find them.

I have taught students as young as 8 years old, My mother-in-law entered her last completion at 87. That's a really wide range. There are age group competitions from children to adult and the best dancers are in there 20's. Lets face it that is when we reach our physical prime.

The reason for the mature crowd is the cost of lessons.the fact that young couples are often raising a family and have little time for outside activities.

For the cost problem try USABDA on the web, They tend to teach free or very cheap lessons. you might try a local College. Many colleges have dance teams.
