Position:Home>Dancing> DANCERS!: I have audition questions!!!!!!?

Question:So.......January 19th equals "A Midsummer Night's Dream" ballet auditions(insert suspensful music here).
I need help.....keep in mind that this is a LOCAL show and it is a fairly meduim-sized city (Our nutcracker show had about 103 dancers)
*Are they going to give us numbers to pin to our leotards?
*Is it going to be like a regular class with people judging you or more one-on-one?
*Do we need to have some sort of routine ready?
*Will they give us a short dance routine and we are expected to remember and copy?
*What will we be judged on? Pur ability to learn fast, turnout, grace, stage presence?

Please tell me about your audiotions for your city's local shows!

Ditto most of what Amazing Dancer wrote, except to add that you'll be judged primarily on your technique (which INCLUDES strength, stamina, upper body, turn out, etc), stage presence and body type. Given that they have specific characters in mind and might already own the costumes, productions frequently need to match the dancers to the existing costumes. At the very least, the dancers need to fit the nature of the characters.

Other considerations that will be used to judge you are how quickly you pick up choreography, how well you take corrections, and your general demeanor (how professionally you behave) as you interact with everyone. Always remember that an audition begins the moment you enter a door and the decision-makers can see you.

I'd like to stress how important body type and stage presence are in casting for women, as either factor can trump technique. You can have perfect turn out, quadruple turns, and powerful leaps, but if your personality doesn't leap out to the audience or you don't look the part, you could be rejected. Therefore, it is better to relax and be yourself at an audition than to stress over technique and a few mess-ups in picking up the choreography. Remember that true performers are supposed to make dance look easy, so it's better to act as though nothing went wrong if you mess up (and fix it for the next time) than to reveal that you're trying really, really hard to get everything perfect.

If you don't get cast, don't take it personally, since your body type is not something you can control during an audition.

All auditions vary. But the auditions that I have been in....

-each dancer gets a number to safety pin on their leotard

-the audition is just like a regular class (barre and then center work)

-you usually do not have to have anything ready (a routine) they usually just tell you to do something and then you do it.

-yes they will probably tell you to do something most likely individually in the center and you are to do it exactly like the teacher shows you.

-you will most likely be judged on your technique, strength, stamina, upper body, TURN OUT, learning choreography fast.

That is what happens in all the auditions that I have been in. It may be different for this audition but this is normally what people look for. Good Luck!!

With most auditions for a local show you will have a panel of three or four judges plus a teacher. When you enter you normally register and are then expected to do your own warm up. You need to ensure that you have done this properly as they will throw you in at the deep end. You are normally expected to pin a number to the front of your leotard so that you can be easily identified. It's best to turn up in appropriate ballet wear and only wear soft shoe unless stated that pointe shows or demi pointes must be worn. If you have either these take these into the auditions with you and place them at the side of the room. As you enter you will be put in height order and you will have a workshop. Bear in mind that parents and friends can be invited in to watch. The audition will begin with a series of small exercises from plie to grand battements as the lines rotate round the exercises will become more complex and a short amalgamtion up to 32 bars will be given. You are normally shown this 2-3 times. During this you will be judged upon your everything. If you are not dancing they will watch your stance and check that you are maintaing a good posture. The height of your kicjs is a big factor so ensure that this is worked on. Always smile as you need to show that you are enjoying yourself and this adds to your stage presence. It is best to prepare a small routine 32 bars is fine, make sure u focus on what you can do not what you cant. Pay attention and respect your teacher, you need to give ee contact and look at the judges you are performing to them, you must treat an audition like an interview. I hope this helps, xxx
