Position:Home>Dancing> Ballet Camp?

Question:Does anyone know of a ballet camp that is in the midwest (prefiably michigan)? My friend and I would like to go to an over-night camp and study ballet. We are at the level of intermidiate. Also we would like to be able to be in the same cabin as each other and do activites together and not be split up to often.

Any suggestions would be great! Thanks.

There are several options for ballet summer camps in Michigan, ranging from arts camps with cabins to nationally renown extension programs of major ballet companies:

Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp

Interlochen Arts Camp

Cecchetti Council of America's International Summer School (on the campus of Hope College in Holland, MI)

Joffrey Midwest Workshop (housed on the Flint Cultural Center)

ABT - Detroit Summer Intensive

Check all the sites for audition details. Housing for the latter three summer intensives is either in dorms or, in Joffrey's case, a Holiday Inn Express (where you pay one set fee through the program), so everyone is in one building. I don't know the camps' policies for requesting cabins.

Michigan's only professional ballet company is the Grand Rapids Ballet Company with 12 dancers. They have a great school, but not a summer program.

All of the programs - and Blue Lake specifically - offer some scholarships. Look into what is required to apply for one. Sad to say, but Blue Lake's costs are actually quite reasonable compared to some other programs.

Do you want to go to a ballet company's summer course, or do you just want to go to a less professional camp? If you want to go to a ballet company such as ABT, SAB, Ballet Chicago, Boston Ballet, etc. you need to audition. I don't know of any national companies in Michigan nor did I find any when I Googled it, but you can check your phonebook.

When I was twelve, I went to Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Michigan, and it was really great, especially as my first real time spent away from home for a while. Many more well known programs have intensives in Michigan too. I can only think of ABT and Joffrey now, and I think Interlochen or Idyllwild (I can't remember which but it starts with an i!) is up there too.
