Position:Home>Dancing> Dance Classes?

Question:Well every year for Christmas, I always end up asking for books, clothes or money. This year I want to get signed up for some type of dance, or sport.
I'm actually leaning more towards dance than sport, because really all I do in sports is stand in net.
So...I'm in my early teens. Never had any training.
What type of dance should I do?
I want something that's a little bit high intensity, nothing like acro though...
Can you please list some dance types that would be intense and explain them? I'm a bit confused right now. Also, what should I wear to each dance class...and I might sound really stupid but what exactly is a body suit?

You should probably take ballet first, because it's the foundation to all dance (if you want to go into dance). It's not intense in the way that makes you sweat, but it will make you strong and build up your muscles, technique, balance, etc. If you're looking for something a bit more adrenaline-rush-like, take hiphop instead. For ballet wear a leotard, tights, and ballet shoes. For hiphop, it varies with the studio but usually dance pants and a t-shirt or tank top is fine.

Hip Hop Dance-
In the 1990s, as hip hop music evolved and grew further away from funk, it became slower, heavier and more aggressive. This modern hip hop music gave birth to new styles of hip hop dancing partly inspired by the old school styles, most of them focusing on upright dancing as opposed to breakdance which is better known for its floor-oriented movements. This is very intense but also very fun if you can master it.

Some more specific styles of new school hip hop are refered to krumping, harlem shake, snap dance, clown walk, crip walk, grinding, Wu-Tang[1], hyphy and gangsta walking.

Ballet-
Much of a ballet dancer’s training takes place at a “barre,” which is the French word for “bar.” The bar is like a wooden pole. It is fastened horizontally to the wall about 38 to 45 inches above the floor. The dancers use the bar in many ways. They place one leg upon the bar, by hooking their heel over it. Then, they can do stretching exercises. Sometimes, they stand with their side toward the bar, and hold the bar with one hand. This helps them to balance as they do “plies,” which are kind of like deep knee bends. Plies are done with the back held straight. Except it might be a bit late to start this.

Tap Dance-
Tap dancers make frequent use of syncopation. Choreographies typically start on the eighth or first beatcount. Another aspect of tap dancing is improvisation. This can either be done with music and follow the beats provided or without musical accompaniment, otherwise known as a capella dancing. Hoofers are tap dancers who dance only with their legs, making a louder, more grounded sound.

Clogging-
Traditional Appalachian clogging is characterized by loose, often bent knees and a "drag-slide" motion of the foot across the floor, and is usually performed to old-time music. Modern competitive clogging, which is inspired by traditional styles, is often done in tap shoes, and is performed to a wide variety of music, including bluegrass, modern country, rock music and hip hop. These high-energy styles have opened the forum to a wide audience with hundreds of workshops and competitions every year.

Salsa Dancing-
Salsa is usually a partner dance, although there are recognized solo steps and some forms are danced in groups of couples, with frequent exchanges of partner. Improvisation and social dancing are important elements of Salsa but it appears as a performance dance too. Salsa is danced on a core beat that lasts for two measures of four beats each. The basic step typically uses three steps each measure. This pattern might be quick-quick-slow, taking two beats to gradually transfer the weight, or quick-quick-quick allowing a tap or other embellishment on the vacant beat. This is not to say that the steps are always on beats 1, 2 and 3 of the measure. (See Styles below.) It is conventional in salsa for the two musical measures to be considered as one, so the count goes from 1 to 8 over two musical bars.

Typically the music involves complex African percussion rhythms based around the Son clave or Rumba clave. Music suitable for dancing ranges from slow at about 120 beats per minute to its fastest at around 180 beats per minute.
Salsa is a slot or spot dance, i.e. the partners do not need to travel over the dance floor but usually occupy a fixed area of the dance floor, rotating around one another and exchanging places. Traveling is not ruled out, but is more used in a staged salsa performance. In a social setting it is bad etiquette to occupy too much floor by traveling.
This can be intense.

Well, sweetie, how intense something is depends on the person. I mean, I'm about your age(maybe even younger) and what I think is easy is what my older sister thinks is intense. But, I would highly suggest Hip-Hop. It's a great dance that may be easy and intense at the same time. It's also very good for working out and getting into shape.

jazz, lyrical, and ballet are my favorite types of dance. lyrical is a mix between jazz and ballet. ballet seems so boring but it actually isnt, and if the dance school has a year end show (recital) it is so much fun performing your class dance. i would recommend getting started now because it is so worth it. have fun and good luck.

p.s. go check out the dance schools so they can explain what the dance types are like, they will help you decide.
