Sounds like a good idea to me.

You can get a degree in dancing? I did not know that. Maybe you should get a double degree dancing and dance therapy so you can get a job teaching retards to dance incase you can't get a choreographer job.

Yes follow your dreams but remember do you want to do a hobby for a career?

I think that you should because you would not want to teach others how to dance and you don't have certain Knowledge. I would maybe first start off being an apprentice and an assistant because I am an assistant choreographer and it is a lot of work.

A degree isn't necessary in the professional world, but is required if you want to work for a school or University. While earning your degree you Will have opportunities to choreograph that would not be given to you in the professional world. The University is a good place to hone your skills and develop a reputation. A degree will help back up your skills when you are starting out in your career.

Sure you can. But keep an open mind. Some of the most successful business people out there got degrees in arbitrary studies such as chemistry or theater. Just the same, some very talented artists studied business or law when they were in school. (You know, if Alan Greenspan had dropped out of Juilliard to study economics, he'd probably be working in some bank somewhere, doing nothing.)

A degree in dance only helps if you want to teach dance at a university. A choreographer is an artist, you can't teach art. One can only be taught the techniques and applications leading to a path of more clearly devised interpretations. If you already have a foot in the door with networks I would so go that route. If not, obtain a degree in dance and do your work in university student shows and make sure you document video of it, as this will be your resume in the end.

It's more complicated than just one simple degree called Dance. But you should look at the courses and take Dance related things. My freind became a choreographer and she got a degree in anatomy along with dance related things.

any collegic degree will be a plus in the long run....(more money)

You don't need one, but it would definitely be a good idea. What kind of choreographer? You need more specifics.

[Finally! Someone asked you "What kind of choreographer"! Anna - #11]

You DO understand that the choreography taught at 99.9% of the college programs is modern dance, right? You need to really love modern dance in order to study choreography in college. Many of the college dance majors who prefer ballet or jazz only take the choreography classes because they are required.

That said, my daughter IS a dance artist who would very much like to earn money through her choreography, and she has most definitely benefitted from her rich college dance program. Classes such as music history, dance history, Dance & Culture, kinesiology, stage production, Careers in Dance (a business class), all of her liberal arts classes and dance technique classes... ON TOP OF her choreography classes - all help her to imagine new dance works, communicate her ideas (both in writing and verbally), promote her finished piece and produce the performance. The whole point of a Bachelors of Fine Arts is turning a potential artist who is a diamond in the rough into a polished gemstone. So those who say that you only need a degree for teaching at a school or University are not entirely correct.
