Question:How do ballet schools work, do they go like a regular school, do you take a certain class for a semester or is it just one continuous class. I am getting ready to start taking ballet and was trying to figure out how it worked since I will be starting in January.

yeah! i love guys who do ballet! way to go! if it's just a studio, then you can usually pick the days, depending on how their scheduling works. :)

unm well if you wanna go to a studio then most studios you get to pick what days you wanna go, but if its an academy arts school then i dont know.

Dance studios/ schools usually operate on an academic year schedule with the same schedule of classes lasting for the entire year from September through May or June. At the studio, you're going to meet a whole bunch of girls who will be delighted to get to know you. I know my daughter, a college dance major, always makes friends much easier with guy dancers than with the other girls since there is so much competition between the girls. Eventually you'll be able to tell your parents about your dance classes. They are just ignorant and don't know any better, but the more they can see what you are doing, the more they'll get used to it. If you wind up in any kind of performance, be sure to invite them.

I think you might like "The Mens Forum" on Ballet Talk for Dancers where you can find support for what you're going through.

Edit to add: Starting a class halfway into the year is up to the studio. You HAVE contacted the studio to discuss your enrollment, right? If they say it's fine, then it's fine. Heck, if they're a studio that puts on a Nutcracker, they may desperately need you this minute as one of the non-dancing "guests at the party." You're a guy! Call them up and they're going to welcome you with open arms!

It differs from dance school to dance school. Some it is one continuous class and others it is just like school wehre you go through grades and such. I think it is so cool you are doing ballet. Truthfully without guys and partners girls don't look so great at ballet. You are the ones who lift us and hold us in amazing possitions. I think it is soo cool when guys do ballet!

first off, kudos for having the guts to do ballet! Real men don't lift weights... they lift women =]

And to answer your question you usually choose the classes you take and your teacher will let you know what level classes you should take. The class runs right along with the regular school calendar but you dont change with semesters or anything, you just take that class all year. Good luck!

since it sounds like you're going to a regular studio they'll offer ballet classes on certain days at certain times. Those times are generally constant throughout the entire year (school year, summer classes generally have a different schedule). You stay in the same class i.e. Ballet I for the entire year, unless your teacher wants you in a different class. Sometimes it's necessary to repeat the same level more than once as there is a lot to learn and practice makes very good (i don't like to say perfect, thats a tall order. lol)
