Position:Home>Dancing> Does anyone have a success story about starting ballet at about 14 or 15 years o

Question:Basically, I'm asking this to see if there's hope for me. I want to start ballet this spring, but It seems 15 years old is too old. My mom thinks so too. A lot of ballerinas started ballet when they were like, 5. But I really, really think i want to do this. My dream is not to dance for a huge ballet company or make this my career, but only to learn ballet, and love it. Of course, I'll love to perform, but it's not like i want to do this as a career. Just throwing this out there to see if anyone else was like i am now :)

My uncle started ballet in college. His girlfriend had him take a class, and he imeadiatley loved it. After lots of training he ended up dancing for Royal Ballet Theater, where he met my future aunt. He is 50 now, and currently teaches at a college in Alabama.

I love that you just want to dance. It's one of my most favorite things. You are never too old. Good Luck, and enjoy dancing!

You cannot give a male success story for a woman. The career ladders for men and women in dance is totally different due to the extreme differences in the numbers competing for jobs. Report It

  • Well, I started at fourteen, and I'm on pointe now and one of the best dancers in my studio, and hoping to major in ballet in college and maybe go professional.

    You can do a lot.

One of the greatest pioneers in ballet, Martha Graham, started when she was 20 years old. She was a huge success. If she was very successful at 20 years old, you can be successful at 15. Why not?
    Good Luck!

You can start learning ballet for fun and fitness at any age. But the more serious your aspirations become, the more serious your ballet studio must be. You can only go as far in ballet as your teachers have, if that.

I know of a success story and want to be a success story myself but not for ballet. Pete Maravich played basketball. He was very small and skinny, but dedicated his life to basketball, always playing it. He eventually made the NBA. Thats what I want to do too, even though I started when I was 13. But hey, look at Steve Nash, another NBA player; he started playing in college and made the NBA!!!

So there is definitely hope for you. Always dance when you get the chance and you will make it.

Remember, with Desire, Discipline, and Dedication, anything is possible.
