Question:I love all these dances.

Can anybody tell me a bit more about them apart from the obvious, and does anybody do them? Which can be danced without a partner? Where could one learn them?

Thanks :)

Charleston - This dance dates back to the 1920's, the time of Flappers, the Speakeasy, and Prohibition. It is the only one here that can really be danced solo. It is not part of the usual ballroom dance curriculum. Lessons seem to show up only about once a year in my city. You may be able to find someone who can teach it to you privately.

Here is an old Charleston video:

Jive - Jive dates back to the 1940's and is a form of swing. It remains part of what one often learns in ballroom dance, and is an International Style Latin Dance. It can be danced in single, double (not very common), or triple step.

Here is just one sample of a fabulous jive video:

Jitterbug can refer to a swing dancer or various types of swing dances, e.g., Lindy Hop, Jive and East Coast Swing. "This has led to confusion within the dance community since jitterbug can refer to different swing dances."

I hope this helps you out.

there are some great videos on you tube

The Charleston was danced in the 1920s Oddly enough if you look in a library most of them have still got "how to do ballroom dancing books" and these generally have instructions. The jive is still taught as standard at Latin American dance classes and is really easy to learn as for the jitterbug I think you would have to ask anyone you know who is American if they can help as it was principally an American Dance or ask at a local dance studio who may be able to give lessons. you can do the Charleston on your own but definitely not the jive or the jitterbug
