The highest performance degree in dance (which includes choreography) in the U.S. is an MFA. Outside of the U.S., the standards are different and some institutions grant PhDs for dance performance.

I know of 3 universities in the U.S. that grant a PhD in Dance. Temple University's is the most well known, Texas Women's University and NYU School of Education, which is for administering college dance programs.

Here's the web site for Temple's dance program:

As you can see, the subdivisions of their PhD curriculum are organized into four subdivisions:
? dance research
? cultural studies in dance
? dance processes
? professional applications

I believe TWU's program is sort of a cross between the other two: part dance scholarship and part pedagogy and teaching. Here's their web site so you can see for yourself.

Folks who want to know more about college dance programs (and answer questions about higher education for dance) should get hold of a copy of the Dance Magazine College Guide which lays out everything:

Joy of dancing - By dancing you free yourself and let things go and release yourself. As what is said in Hindu mythology, the whole universe is dancing to the tune of the Supreme Dancer - Lord Shiva.

You'll most likely have to do a PhD of fine or performing arts, not exclusively dance. It will likely involve research and a disertation, but then, so does a reputable Masters
